Beginning of July 2016 already back from the desert because an injury to my knee caused just only by Mr Alex Hofer

This year my experience in the desert (Maurizio) was very short. (2 days)

It ended up with an injury to my knee caused just only by Mr Alex Hofer.

I have it inside my chest and I have to take out

He let the line go loose … opening the brake of the clutch just in the moment I was taking off… That was intentional… Since today I didn’t understand if he wanted to make a joke, if it was a mistake or what… (for sure he didn’t want to hurt me)

99.9% of the time I help Alex to take off, and I stay on the winch, then I take off alone with the dirver, without problems, always using the same procedure… just for once he was on the winch helping…

I never had an injury in 20 years flying paragliding… I knew that soon or later I could have had one, especially for the risks I take having cross country here in China, flying in some narrow valleys full of power lines never seen before, sometime risking rotors or impossible landing… But I never thought I could ever have had an injury like this.

This year Mr Hofer was very negative since the beginning… Usually he is a nice guy, but this year… he behaved like a spoiled boy who complains because he is in a place he doesn’t want to be because of other persons. It was clear that he didn’t want to come… maybe because he just had a baby or for other reasons… it was clear that he was pulling back…

Next year I will go to my beloved desert again, but to be safer I’ll go alone.

August 26th 2015

Back home... we spent 2 weeks, but we could fly only 6 - 7 days. Flying was nice but we were back to the hotel late because the pick-up of the pilot was problematic. We had winch problems for many days till we figured out what it was... Fortunately no real accidents (I would say also thanks to the experince of the 2 pilots). One day i was too tired, not sleeping for days and i decided to not fly.... wrong decision, it was the best day... Alex told flew 202 km, new Chinese record...???

Actually according to Google Earth they were about 170 km... But Alex didn't take the data cable and the live system was not working. When i told him i couuld modify my data cable to extract the data from his instrument he said that the memory was enough and he could exxtract the data at home...

After few 2 day he told that the flight data was lost forever.... What a champion....

We are quite ready....

Late June 2015
Jb Vario Supports Taklamakan Desert Project. Maurizio Romano (me) and Alex Hofer will carry 2 Jb MINI. The choice dropped on the Jb MINI because the long autonomy and the weight (30 grams). If you walk in the desert in August grams matter...

May 2015
Alex will fly the new Avax XC 5. Gradient is one of the main sponsors. Gradient provided 2 new Aspen 5 1 year ago... In May Ondrey promised an Avax for Alex (for me Aspen 5 is enough)

Development: We got the Avax on late July. August the second after many days of rain Alex tried the Avax in Shenzhen (a city on the ocean)... First flight more than 50 km landing close to an airport (better not to cross it). Alex is super happy of the new toy...

Gradient Paragliders

From October 4th to October 15 th 2014
We went to the desert. So we could try the gliders and we had the possibility to setup everything for next year... very beautiful... Back in the Taklamakan desert in 2015

October first 2014
Gliders released by the custom. Finaly after more than two months the Aspen 5 were released by the custom office. We were so happy...

Late July 2014
Gradient Paragliders arrived but stopped by the Chinese custom in Shenzhen.  Aspen 5 was finally certificated, but Gradient closed for holiday... Ondrej opened the factory by himself to pack the gliders to let us have as soon as possible... July 27 one of my friends was taking the gliders to Shenzhen where Alex Hofer lives, but he was stopped by the custom. Gliders are now in their offices. I and Alex went to the office but there was no way to know when the gliders will be given back and to which conditions... Trying to fly in China is not easy and the bureaucracy is much harder than the desert... Paragliders were never stopped to that office before...
I went to Shenzhen to visit Alex and to try to get the Aspen 5... No way..

Late June 2014
Supair Supports Taklamakan Desert Project. Supair is one of the main sponsors. We will fly 2 Skyppers. The choice dropped on the Skypper for the high comfort provided by this harness, together with high performance achievable, and the best safety standards...

June 2014
Gradient Supports Taklamakan Desert Project. Gradient is one of the main sponsors. Gradient provides 2 new Aspen5. We will fly the 28 sqm. The Aspen5 is certified EN C. Very safe, easy to handle but with impressive performance for his class. A cross country machine... where it is not just important how fast you can be, but how many hours you can handle safely the gliders in very difficult condition.
